\nOverview
\nThe role requires strong expertise in mechanical equipment layouts, piping systems, 2D drafting, 3D modeling, and multidisciplinary design coordination. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with equipment arrangements, chilled water and condenser water systems, liquid cooling distribution, fuel oil systems, piping routings, and constructability reviews. This position will play a key role in coordinating engineering, procurement, and construction activities to ensure design packages are complete, accurate, buildable, and ready for construction.\nKey Responsibilities
\nDesign Leadership and Team Coordination
\n\n\n\t- Lead and coordinate mechanical and piping design activities across multiple projects.
\n\t- Assign design tasks, establish priorities, and monitor progress against project schedules.
\n\t- Review drawings, 3D models, piping layouts, and design deliverables for accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
\n\t- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training to designers and drafters.
\n\t- Coordinate design resources, deliverables, and interfaces across engineering teams, contractors, equipment vendors, and construction personnel.
\n\t- Contribute to developing design standards, drafting procedures, standard details, and best practices.
\n
\n\nMechanical and Piping Design
\n\n\n\t- Lead the development of mechanical equipment layouts, general arrangements, plot plans, piping plans, sections, and 3D models for industrial and advanced technology facilities.
\n\t- Oversee piping design for chilled water and condenser water systems, cooling towers, dry coolers, CRAH/CRAC systems, liquid cooling distribution systems, fuel oil systems, generator exhaust, HVAC ductwork, and associated utilities.
\n\t- Review equipment locations, piping routings, pipe supports, hangers, penetrations, sleeves, tie-ins, isometrics, and bills of materials.
\n\t- Ensure adequate access for equipment maintenance, rigging, installation, operations, and future expansion.
\n\t- Review vendor drawings, equipment specifications, connection details, nozzle locations, anchor points, weights, and service clearances.
\n\t- Lead 3D model reviews and clash detection, resolving interferences with civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation, and other disciplines.
\n\t- Ensure mechanical and piping designs comply with applicable ASME B31 standards, ASHRAE, IMC/UMC, NFPA, IBC, and project-specific design requirements.
\n
\n\nConstructibility and Project Delivery
\n\n\n\t- Review design deliverables for scope completeness, constructibility, procurement requirements, and compatibility with other disciplines.
\n\t- Participate in 30%, 60%, and 90% model reviews, constructibility reviews, and issued-for-construction (IFC) readiness reviews.
\n\t- Support material take-offs, bills of materials, procurement requisitions, equipment evaluations, and vendor drawing reviews.
\n\t- Identify design gaps, conflicting information, long-lead equipment risks, and potential construction delays.
\n\t- Coordinate piping layouts, equipment spacing, pipe rack interfaces, underground utilities, and field installation requirements.
\n\t- Ensure design documents accurately reflect engineering requirements, project specifications, vendor information, and construction needs.
\n
\n\nQuality Assurance and Documentation Management
\n\n\n\t- Perform design checks and quality reviews to verify drawing accuracy, code compliance, and adherence to project standards.
\n\t- Manage drawing registers, design revisions, deliverable schedules, and document control requirements.
\n\t- Review and respond to construction requests for information (RFIs), field change requests, and installation redlines.
\n\t- Maintain accurate design documentation, as-built drawings, and model revisions using project document management systems.
\n\t- Document design assumptions, decisions, technical issues, and corrective actions to maintain alignment across project stakeholders.
\n\t- Contribute to lessons learned, root-cause reviews, and continuous improvement of design quality and project execution procedures.
\n
\n\nEngineering, Construction, and Field Coordination
\n\n\n\t- Coordinate mechanical and piping design activities with engineering teams, procurement personnel, contractors, equipment vendors, and field operations.
\n\t- Work closely with mechanical engineers and other discipline leads to ensure technical completeness and design compatibility.
\n\t- Support field verification, installation troubleshooting, interference resolution, startup, testing, and commissioning activities.
\n\t- Conduct site visits to verify existing conditions, confirm dimensions, and resolve design issues.
\n\t- Present design layouts, alternatives, and recommendations during client meetings, coordination sessions, and design reviews.
\n\t- Identify project risks early and recommend practical solutions to protect safety, quality, budget, and schedule.
\n
\n\nRequired Qualifications
\n\n\n\t- High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate degree or technical certificate in drafting, mechanical design technology, engineering technology, or a related field is preferred.
\n\t- Minimum of 10 years of mechanical and piping design experience on large commercial, industrial, mission-critical, or EPC projects.
\n\t- At least 5 years of experience in a senior or lead designer role.
\n\t- Demonstrated experience leading mechanical and piping design activities, developing equipment layouts, and coordinating 3D models across multiple disciplines.
\n\t- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and at least one 3D mechanical or plant piping design platform.
\n\t- Experience with Autodesk Revit MEP and Navisworks, AutoCAD Plant 3D, CADWorx, SP3D/E3D, or comparable design software.
\n\t- Working knowledge of applicable ASME B31 standards, ASHRAE, IMC/UMC, NFPA, IBC, and project-specific design criteria.
\n\t- Ability to interpret P&IDs, flow diagrams, equipment drawings, vendor documents, specifications, data sheets, and civil, structural, and electrical drawings.
\n\t- Practical understanding of piping fabrication, material selection, equipment installation, rigging, testing, maintenance access, and construction sequencing.
\n\t- Experience with constructability reviews, clash detection, material take-offs, construction RFIs, field redlines, and as-built documentation.
\n\t- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Bluebeam or similar markup tools, and engineering document management systems.
\n\t- Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
\n\t- Ability to manage multiple projects, work independently, prioritize competing deadlines, and coordinate effectively with multiple companies and disciplines.

\n\nPreferred Qualifications
\n\n\n\t- Experience with data centers or other mission-critical facilities, including hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise environments.
\n\t- Knowledge of chilled water plants, condenser water systems, CRAH/CRAC distribution, coolant distribution units (CDUs), liquid cooling loops, cooling towers, dry coolers, and fuel oil systems.
\n\t- Experience working on large-scale EPC, design-build, industrial, energy, power, petrochemical, or utility infrastructure projects.
\n\t- Experience coordinating design deliverables across mechanical, piping, civil, structural, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines.
\n\t- Familiarity with Autodesk Construction Cloud, BIM 360, Procore, and BIM coordination workflows, including LOD 300–400 models and shop drawing or spool coordination.
\n\t- Working proficiency in both Revit/Navisworks and a plant piping design platform.
\n\t- Familiarity with pipe stress and support design inputs, including anchor and guide locations, expansion loops, expansion joints, and CAESAR II results.
\n\t- Field or trade background in pipefitting, mechanical contracting, BIM coordination, or field engineering.
\n\t- Experience developing design standards, checklists, templates, standard details, and lessons-learned programs.

\n\nLocation & Travel
\n\n\n\t- Houston, Texas — office-based position supporting multiple projects.
\n\t- Occasional travel, up to approximately 30%, to project sites, company offices, and client meetings for design reviews, field walkdowns, RFI resolution, and startup support.
\n\t- Extended, multi-week site assignments may be required during critical installation, testing, and commissioning phases.
